HAPPY NEW YEAR!

FROM SUN HILLS LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hi Ladies,

It seems that this is my first duty, to write a note on the
wonderful blog that Dodie has created.   I'm excited to lead
the Sun Hills Ladies Golfers this coming year.   I'm even more
excited that Dodie, Karen & Judi are staying on the board so we
don't flounder too much because of inexperience in ladies league.

LuJean Jones is our unofficial main helper, and she and Sally
Jones have already made exciting things happen.  Our group is
eager to make a good contribution.

My hope is to get to know each of you, and try to make our
league a pleasant and fun experience.  I also hope that:

   * we'll improve our golf skills.
   * we'll have a lot of fun.
   * we'll become good friends.

Please ask around and let's see if we can increase our numbers.
The Course has been great and I look forward to working with our
new Pro, Mike Bicker.

Have a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year.   Blessings to all.

CLOSING SOCIAL

Greetings Sun Hills Ladies!

Last night was the Closing Social for our 2015 season.  It was well attended and a huge success!  We had a wonderful meal from the Olive Garden, very successful raffle, a fun Happy Birthday to Vicky Bicker and a nice microfiber towel at the door.

We welcomed back 2 of our faithful members who had to take of year off from Sun Hills Ladies but will be returning in the spring.  It was wonderful to see you CJ Talbot and Linda Rammel.

We celebrated the progress that was made at Sun Hills with PGA Professional Mike Bicker at the helm.  There is no doubt Sun Hills will return to and surpass its former glory!  We can't wait to experience the trip!

We said good-bye to Vardell Laursen, Debbie Pruett, Micheller and Janice Ventura as members of the board.  We will still see them in their new roles as regular members of Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association!  Thank you all for the wonderful things you did for Sun Hills Ladies!

We elected a new league President - Zelva Goodrich.  We are excited to have Zelva as our new league leader and look forward to her insights and ideas!

We elected/re-elected Karen Mitchell as our Secretary/Treasurer.  Welcome back Karen!

Judi Tutorow was re-elected as Handicap Chair and Dodie Roberts was re-elected as Tournament Chair.  So happy they decided to stick around awhile!

We also made a couple of trial changes to the way the league does business.  With the addition of the Munch Box Cafe at the Pro Shop, we voted to have them provide the meals for the league events that serve food next year.

We also voted to pursue the idea of recruiting sponsors for the league rather than going to local businesses for door prizes for every event.  Sun Hills is offering complementary golf to businesses who sponsor our league.  These funds will be used for our various events like our Club Championship, Member/Guest, etc.  Complete details will be posted soon.

As a result of these 2 trial changes, it was voted to suspend the positions of Social Chair and Prize Chair for this next season.  If our new pursuits are successful, we will vote for a change to league by-laws next fall.

Thanks to all the members of Sun Hills Ladies!  Your dedication to our league and Sun Hills Golf Course is what makes us successful and FUN!  Have a great winter and we'll see you next year!!!

NUTTS WITH A TWIST - September 30, 2015

Greetings Ladies!

Well, the 2015 season is in the books!  The Board of Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association would like to thank all of the wonderful ladies on our league.  This year we had the smallest membership in quite a few years.  However, that didn't deter any of us from having a great experience and enjoying seeing Sun Hills begin the return to its former glory.

Although it was a wonderful day for the final POD of the season, we only had 24 ladies come out.  I'd say regardless of scores, we were all winners enjoying a wonderful day.  However, there were winners for NUTTS WITH A TWIST and here they are!  Congrats to all.

CLOSING SOCIAL

Hello Ladies!

Just a reminder that this coming Wednesday, September 30th, is our last week of organized league play for the 2015 season.  The following week, October 7th, is our Closing Social.  Since we are having Olive Garden cater it this year, we have to have a final count on who will be attending the social by September 30th at the latest!  If you haven't signed up and are planning to attend, please do so by next Wednesday.

If you haven't signed up and can't play our last POD next week, PLEASE COMMENT TO THIS POST and we will add you to the list.

We hope to see you all there.  There is a lot planned for that evening!

Thanks for your support of Sun Hills Ladies!!!

CRYSTAL BALL WITH A TWIST - September 23, 2015

Greetings Sun Hills Ladies!  For such a beautiful fall day it was surprising that we only had 27 ladies come out and "Crystal Ball with a Twist".  I hope that everyone who played enjoyed the day.  I have to mention we have a lady on the league who polished up her "Crystal Ball" and in spite of the "Twist" guessed her score right on the button!  Way to go Zelva!  If you decide to hang up your shingle, I'll be there for your first "reading"!  With that, CONGRATS to everyone with the gift!

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 POD

Ladies this is what we will be playing this week for our POD.  Enjoy!!

PRO's TIP OF THE MONTH - QUESTION ANSWERED

In response to the question about removing ‘’’loose impediments” from your ball, or near your ball…yes it is perfectly legal to remove anything that is not “fixed or growing” from your ball. Just be very careful when removing a loose impediment from your ball or around your ball, as it is a one stroke penalty if your ball moves while you are removing such impediments.

Also, as we aereate the fairways in the next couple of weeks, you may find your ball nestled down in one of the holes. It is perfectly legal to move your ball out of an aereation hole. Just place it so it is out of the hole. Same for the green aereation.

Thanks for the good question!  Anytime you have a golf question, please comment on any BLOG post and we will get the answer and post it right here!!!

LEAGUE BOARD

Greetings Sun Hills Ladies!

At the Club Championship, Vardell announced that she is “retiring” from the position of President of the league after this season.  Also, Janice Ventura and Michelle Heller will no longer be prize and social chairs.  Karen Mitchell will be able to resume her role as secretary/treasurer.  We can’t thank Debbie Pruett enough for volunteering to fill in for Karen for this season.

Dodie Roberts would like to continue in her roll as tournament chair and Judi Tutorow would like to continue as handicap chair.

With all that being said, Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association needs a president, social chair and prize chair.

We would like to appeal to everyone on the league to think about stepping in and becoming part of the Sun Hills Ladies Board.  With the new management at Sun Hills, this is a perfect time to implement new ideas and make the league bigger and better!  Mike is ready and willing to work with us to achieve that goal.
So talk it over with your friends and fellow league members.  If you have any questions about the expectations of any of these positions, feel free to contact Vardell or any of the Board.  SHLGA needs you!

Thanks for making Sun Hills Ladies a great league!  And…here’s to a fantastic future!

DOTS & PUTTS - September 9, 2015

Greetings Ladies!

We had 28 ladies come out to play Dots & Putts in the nice September weather!  There was some darn good scoring...lots of dots!  Here are the winners!  Congrats to you!  And thanks to our wonderful league members for coming out and enjoying the September Mystery Plays!

CLOSING SOCIAL - October 7, 2015

Ladies,

Sadly, the end of the 2015 season is approaching.  As such, we are now beginning to organize our Closing Social.  This year the Closing Social will be held on October 7, 2015.  Mark this date on your calendars.

This year we will be having Olive Garden cater our dinner.  There will be Chicken Marsala, Spaghetti and Meatballs, Salad, Bread Sticks and Dessert.  If anyone who is planning on attending has any special dietary needs, please let us know so we can work with you to accommodate those needs.

Since it is being catered, it is vital that you sign up so we can ensure we order enough food.  The sign up sheet will be on our table Wednesday.  Don't wait - sign up as soon as you can.  And please pass the word to members who don't have access to the BLOG.

THANKS!!!

ONE WOMAN SCRAMBLE NET - September 2, 2015

Greetings Ladies!  We had 26 ladies come out and scramble with themselves this week.  There were some pretty darn good scores!  Congrats to the winners!

LOW PUTTS - August 19, 2015

Hello Sun Hills Ladies!

We had a decent turnout this week for our "LOW PUTTS" pod - 32 ladies!  And...there was some pretty awesome putting going on.  There were a lot of ties this week.  This week ties were broken based on how many putts on the hardest holes rather than strokes.

This week we also had a couple of pretty darn good Closest to the Holes shots!  Way to go Deb and Pam!

Thank you all for coming out and supporting your association and Sun Hills GC!  Here are this week's Eagle Eye putting winners!

SEPTEMBER MYSTERY PLAYS

Ladies,

As most of you know, September is the month the we do what we call "Mystery Plays".  This is when we take suggestions from you all and try out new PODs.

If any of you have any FUN PODs that you would like us to try, please email me with your ideas.  If they are plays that can fit into league play, I will try my darndest to feature them in September.

The only play I have on the agenda so far is a "One Woman Scramble".  So hurry and get your ideas to me!

Thanks!  Dodie

SUN HILLS LADIES 2015 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Greeting Sun Hills Ladies!

Congratulations to the winners in the 2015 Club Championship!  We want to thank all of you who were able to come out and play in this year's championship.  We were all winners in the respect of coming out and supporting Sun Hills and your fellow league members in this important event.  It is the league members who make our league what it is!

We want to thank Sun Hills, Mike Bicker, and staff for their support of our league.  We appreciate the efforts they make every week to help make Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association a success.  Thank you so much.

CONGRATULATIONS TO IRENE LAMBORN AND ALL THE WINNERS FOR 2015!!!!!

NUTTS - August 5, 2015

Greetings Ladies!  With the exception of an unfortunate squall that stormed through Sun Hills around 6ish it was a pretty nice day for NUTTS!  There was some fine putting going on to give some pretty decent scores.  Even a couple of ladies who were almost blown away cashed this week!

For the first time in forever there weren't enough ladies playing with handicaps in the 20s and 30s to allow me to separate those flights.  That's why you will see them combined this week.  I really had to sit back scratch my head for a minute.

Also, there was another mix up with the Closest to the Hole markers this week.  We have gotten together with Mike and solved that problem.  To ensure that the funds we have set aside for Closest to the Holes are distributed to our members, we will be paying the 4 CTHs and Long Drive contests at the Club Championship with Pro Shop credits rather than with 9 hole passes.

Congrats to the NUTTY winners!

PRO'S TIP OF THE MONTH

Ladies,  Sorry it's been awhile since we've had a "Tip".  Mike sent a great one this time regarding pace of play.  If you have any questions about this tip or any ideas for future tips, please comment to this post.

Pro's Tip of the Week:

What is "slow play".

Different courses have different ideas on what is the proper speed of play and when golfers are playing too slow. Sun Hills falls into the middle range of difficulty and length which are the main factors that create different pace of play guidelines.

That being said, the normal pace of play for a foursome should take no more than 2 hours and 15 minutes for 9 holes. For a twosome it should take no more than 2 hours. Walking vs riding only adds about 10 minutes per 9 hole round. So a pace of 15 minutes per hole for 3 or 4 players should be adequate for most players.

The key to faster play is:

1) always be ready to play when it is your turn.

2) if you ride, grab a couple clubs and walk to your ball if you are on the other side of the fairway.

3) Always putt out as long as you don't have to stand on someone's line.

4) Play ready golf on the tee, don't worry about honors when teeing off.

5) Socialize while riding or walking to your ball, but stop, hit and continue between shots and on the tee.

Enjoy the game, the company, the scenery and being outside. But don't ruin other player's games by making them wait on you the whole round!

If anyone has questions regarding their eligibility please respond to this post and we will be right there to help you!!!

STRING TOURNAMENT - July 29, 2015

Greetings Ladies!  We had a little bit better turnout for this week's "String" POD.  30 of you came out and played.  Unfortunately, the Closest to the Hole markers didn't come out this week.  We will have a couple extra competitions in the Club Championship to ensure those funds come back to you.  Thanks for your understanding!  Here are the winners for the "String" fest...CONGRATS!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - AUGUST 12, 2015

Ladies, Mark your calendars - AUGUST 12, 2015 is the Club Championship.  More info to follow!!

CRIERS & WHINERS - July 22, 2015

Greetings Ladies!  WOW!  We had a real light turnout this week - 19 is all.  Hopefully, those who weren't with us were having pre-Pioneer Day fun with family and friends.

Because of the number of ladies playing, I did the flighting and paying a bit differently in order to give everyone a fair shot at cashing.  If you want me to give you the lowdown on how I did it let me know.  It looks like everyone used their "Do-Overs" strategically.  I noted on the post sheet how many were used just for fun!

Congrats to the winners!  Hope to see you all Wednesday for "String" POD!

BEAT (or tie) THE PRO - July 8, 2015

Hi All!  This week we had 28 brave (?) souls come out to "Beat the Pro".  For some it was rough going - wind, rain and cold but HATS OFF to you!  Since this is the first REAL "Beat the Pro" we've had in years, Mike gave us a break and played in some of the worst weather Wednesday so that more of us would have a chance to beat him.   I'm sure that next year it will be each one to their own!  Congrats to the winners!

Since this coming Wednesday is "Thelma & Lou", those of you who didn't sign up remember to call and get your tee time for July 22.

Sunday, July 5, 2015

THELMA & LOU SIGN UP

Ladies,  We only have this coming week left to sign up for "Thelma & Lou Scramble" on July 15th.  If you can't get to Sun Hills to sign-up, please COMMENT to this post with your name and partner's name and we'll get you signed up.

Although this event  no longer requires a "Beast", we would still like you to invite an outside guest.  This could be your brother, significant other, niece, or anyone you would like to have a fun evening of golf with.

Thanks for your continuing support of Sun Hills Ladies!

RED, WHITE & BLUE - July 1, 2015

Greeting Ladies!  This week for our RED, WHITE & BLUE play of the day we had 33 come out to test their skills for all that Sun Hills could throw at us by way of tee boxes.  This includes 2 new members to Sun Hills Ladies - Sandy Schiszler and Marie Zamora.  Welcome Sandy and Marie! Here are the ladies who chose the best tee boxes for their game!  Congrats!!

PRO's TIP OF THE WEEK

Sorry the Tip of the Week became Tip of the Month...

How about a Chipping Lesson?

I keep seeing most players using a sand wedge or even a lob wedge for almost all their shots around the green. I believe you should use the least lofted club that will safely carry to the green and let the ball run on the ground rather than try to fly a shot all the way to the hole. Try gripping down on a seven or eight iron when you are just a few feet off the green and have plenty of green to work with. Just shorten your back swing and brush the grass like a long putt with those irons. Bump and run the ball instead of trying to fly the ball most of the way to the hole. With a little practice, you can become a great "chipper".

Here is the scoop:

DICE ROLL - June 24, 2015

Hey There!

In spite of the sweltering temps, we had 31 brave souls cone out to play DICE ROLL this week. From the look of some of the scores, some of you should have straight to Wendover after your round!  Here are the dicey winners!  Congrats!!!

Greetings Sun Hills Ladies,

Thanks so much for your patience in waiting for these posts.  Our LOW NET contest on June 17th had 33 players coming out to test their game against their handicap.  Here are the winners!  Congrats!!!

POD POSTING

Ladies,

I will be vacationing the next week and a half.  Therefore, the winners for the 17th won't be posted the weekend of the 20th.  It will be posted at the same time I post the 24th.

Thanks for your understanding!  You're the best!

2015 MEMBER/GUEST - RALLY FOR THE CURE

Our 2015 Member/Guest - Rally for the Cure was a huge success. Miraculously, we didn't get rained out!  We had 51 ladies in attendance!  Great turn out.  Of these 51, 18 were guests and we got 2 new members!  Welcome Sandy and Marie!

Big THANKS goes out to Sun Hills, Mike and the staff for allowing us to, once again, invade the course.  Their support of Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association is awesome and appreciated.

The planning and coordination for this event was a group effort.  Vardell kept us all focused and on task to lead us to the successful event we had.  Janice coordinated the Rally and got us awesome prizes and and raffle baskets.  Micheller and her crew again gave us a delicious dinner!  Debbie kept track of the $$$ that were collected and got them distributed quickly and efficiently.  Dodie and Judi got the tournament organized and winning groups determined without a hitch.

The Rally for the Cure was once again a success.  It is a cause Sun Hills Ladies has been passionate about for years and years.  This year, thanks for everyone's generosity, we were able to donate over $900!

As a Board, we want to thank YOU for coming out and supporting your league.  Without you no amount of planning and coordination could make this night a success!

This year, Gaye Rhoades was manning the camera for us and, darn it, she ran into a snafu when trying to email the pictures to me for the BLOG.  So...here's a trip down Memory Lane!

THANK YOU SUN HILLS LADIES!
